4020 front weights

The question on front weights got me thinking. On the front slabs for a 4020 and others, how many bolts are supposed to be used for each--2 or 4? Is it even possible to put all four carriage bolts in for each slab? If so, it would be better, especially if one has a full set on.

The pads are designed to be installed with two bolts per pad. Every other weight is rotated 180 degrees from the next and that is why the long slots and extra holes are designed into each pad.

Although I did bust a slot out of a pad once from overtightening and was able to hold the bolt in the upper part of the slot to install the next weight, so theoretically I suppose you could use extra bolts if you were careful enough. I have put 10 pads on a set of doulbe stacks before without concern.

I've seen two styles of 4010/20 front weights...the big tall weights that used 4 bolts(two up high..just under the front grill...and two down low on the cast front axel bolster)...always reminded me big reinforcing plates for ramming things! Then you have the usual front weights that bolt down low with two bolts..you just stack-up as many as needed to make a nice cast-iron bumper...

I read somewhere that with the single stack weights, Deere did not recommend more than 4 weights ahead of the side weights. The bolts were
not designed for more weight. I had a neighbor that bought a 1968 4020 diesel. still has it, and put on about 10 pads and a 5 bottom mounted
plow and from bouncing across the end of the field, he finally broke both frame rails. They are still on there welded together.

My grandfather said, as a rule of thumb, they'd put one weight on for each plow bottom they were pulling. They pulled 5 bottom Oliver semi-mounts with 4020's. Their 4020's had the single stack weights, but his 4320 had doubles.
