Splitdorf 246T Magneto Magnet Recharging

Have a Splitdorf 246T magneto, that was taken off a running John Deere D tractor, several
years ago. Thought I would get it ready to sell on Ebay. Bench tested, and there was no
spark. After cleaning and gapping the points, to no avail, the top cover was removed, and we
found that the magnets had lost their charge. How does one go about recharging them?

Hi-You have to have someone with a magnetism charger (a magneto shop) re-magnetize the magnet.

Takes some time (1-2 days) I have heard!

I think there is a schematic on this sight somewhere if you want attempt to do it yourself.

It takes less than a second but supplying the 24,000 ampere turns of magnetic field strength is next to impossible without a pricey special made magnetizer. Dave Gingery authored a how to build magneto magnetizer paperback for $11 which is still available on eBay. But the quickest and by far cheapest way to get you going would be to visit a local engine/tractor show where often a gentleman can be found charging magnetos with his paid for device for a nominal fee if even that. Store bought, I've seen a price tag of $800 for the device new while at the same time being out of stock and unavailable at that unbelievable price point. I was always going to make one myself but never got around to it. Pertronix ignition set removed any need for one too.

The answer is you dont, you send it out. It takes about 2 seconds to charge one but the machine to do it properly is real expensive due to lots of copper, mine weighs over a 100 lbs. Surely there are people close to you that can do it. Go over to smokstak and ask who does it near you or go to a large engine show as the mag guys set up at most of them.
