John Deere Electronic Ignition

I have put in 2 electronic ignitions for my 2030 and they last about six months until they burn out. Does anyone know what could be causing this to happen? Any help would be appreciated.

They need to have graphite core spark plug wires or they will do that. Learned that directly from the manufacturer of the kit when we burned out the module in one. Been running 25 years since with no problems. For some reason that is not mentioned at all in the instructions.

Cliff, I don't dispute your experience but I have had an electronic unit on a 60 for nearly twenty years with copper wires with no problems whatsoever. I've never had a problem of any kind with the Pertronix units although I know some folks have. All I know is I have never experienced any. Mike

I have three units installed. One on my 530 WITH the ballast resistor, and one each on my 630 and 730LP that are straight 12v. No problems with any of them and the 530 is the oldest one installed.

Cornerpost may have the heart of the issue nailed up here. I'm running real wire in the spark plug wire with no issues other than the flamethrower coil itself is uncomfortably hot to the touch while running. I can't imagine how hot it would get if just sitting with ignition on and there weren't a break in the current for the spark to happen.

This hot coil issue indicates that they have too much simulated points closed time in their design with plenty of wasted current just making heat in the coil. Push that too far with 100% on time and I could easily believe that coil and/or controller unit could fail.

I had the same luck with a 2510 last year. When it worked it worked great but only lasted a couple months. I needed to feed with it in the middle of winter so I put it back to stock and left it.
