1952 B - No Spark

1952 B converted to 12V with alternator and a delco distributer. Ran fine for several years, but now I am getting no spark at the plugs. New points/condensor and spark plugs (Autolite 386). I am getting 12v all the way to the points with ignition on. Wiring is: ignition to resister, then to + side of coil, then from - side of coil to distributer. The coil is 12v for use with external resistence. Should I be getting 12v at the points with a resister in line? I'm open to all comments/advice. THANKS in advance!!

You should read 12 volts only if the points are open. If the points are closed you should read almost no volts so good chance you points are dirty or have a protective coating on them so they do not conduct power. With the points closed and ignition turned on if you open and close the points by hand you should get a spark every time you open and close them. If no spark the points need to be cleaned. If you got your points form say tractor supply that is the problem because there points and very poorly made

I hope you just didn't make a mistake...the Coil needs to be Down Wind of the Dist for the Points to make and Break the current..

Just sayin...

IIRC ? with a resistor in line and the points closed you should not be getting full voltage at the coil. It has to be reduced or else the coil will get hot and fry as will your points burn up early.

Heres the deal,

(A) With Ignition ON and points CLOSED with an inline ballast resistor on a 12 volt tractor you should
read

5 to 7 Volts on the coils + Input

ZERO Volts on coils OUTPUT (to Distributor)

(B) With Ignition ON and Points OPEN

12 Volts on BOTH sides of the coil
