This is the third time I have tried to post this and it never shows up so this is the last time. I have a LA John and I would like to know how I can identify the motor. A Hercules or a John Deere.

As I understand it, L tractors up to 639,999 used a Hercules engine, L tractors from 640,000 up used a John Deere engine, and ALL LA tractors used a John Deere engine.

Believe the Hercules has a removable flywheel housing, the John Deere engine has the flywheel housing cast with the engine block.

Hope I got this right!

If it's an LA it should have the Deere engine. Bob is correct about the flywheel housing. A Deere engine will also have a starter mounting at the top of the flywheel. Also you should be able to get four fingers between the spark plugs on the Deere engine, only about two on the Herc.

Also the governor assembly does not hang down on a JD engine like it does on a Herc engine. The Herc engine front plate has the upright oil tube where the JD engines on the L's the tube is mounted into the block itself, not the front plate/cover. Also on the head of the Herc engine the coolant tube is forward of the two spark plugs where on the JD engine it is almost exactly between the two spark plugs.

All variations of the parts books are available from JD on JD parts still. The best thing you can do is go to JD parts and download the L parts book. Shows the breakdown of both the Herc motor and the JD motor. PC150 is the number on it. Then go look at your tractor and see what you have. I really doubt you have a herc motor in a LA frame without there being some modifications to the LA frame. The two motors are not exactly the same.
