John Deere 70 gas won't start

My John Deere 70 has been hit and miss if it will start lately. I have checked the battery (which is good). When I turn the switch the lights do not come on and nothing happens when I push the starter button. I can pull start it and run it for a while but when I try to restart it is the same problem. I have power to the switch. What else can I check or how do I fix the problem?

Remove all battery cable's & grounds & clean them up , make sure all are making Good Contact.
Same goes for the starter connection & the starter Switch, see if problem remains the same, make
sure battery box is grounded to the rear housing..

Agree with both [b:654c4848f0]rla[/b:654c4848f0] and [b:654c4848f0]david from kansas[/b:654c4848f0].

Had the same problem with "15" one of our 1953 Model 70s.

You might also consider "grounding" the positive battery cable to one of the bolts securing the rockshaft bearing.

So I tested the power to the battery which is good. I tested to the coil which is good. When I push the button on the starter switch nothing happens. What is the chances of that being the problem? I would assume if that is I want the one without the side screw?

Before you begin troubleshooting:

Lock [b:654c4848f0]BOTH[/b:654c4848f0] brakes.

Shift the transmission into [b:654c4848f0]NEUTRAL[/b:654c4848f0].

Turn the ignition switch to the [b:654c4848f0]OFF[/b:654c4848f0] position.

Turn the gas [b:654c4848f0]OFF[/b:654c4848f0] at the fuel filter.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the starter opening cover (Key 23).

Take a look at the photo below of the location of the starter opening cover on the engine and transmission case.

Remove the starter opening cover and check for power at the starter switch.

If there is no power at the starter switch, then check the cable connection at positive terminal on the battery.

If there is power at the starter switch, then push the button to engage the starting motor.

If the starting motor does engage, then check and/or adjust the starting motor pedal and linkage.

If the starting motor does not engage, then remove the starter switch.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the stud terminal (Key 12).

Briefly touch the battery cable to the stud terminal.

If the starting motor does not engage, then remove the starter.

If the starting motor does engage, then check both the starter switch terminal and stud terminal for excessive wear.

Take a look at the photo below of the starter switch.

Check for excessive wear on the leading edge of the starter switch terminal.

If the starter switch terminal is worn excessively, then replace the starter switch.

Take a look at the photo below of an excessively worn stud terminal.

If the stud terminal is worn excessively, then replace the stud terminal.

Take a look at the photo below.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the black wire from the starter switch side terminal to the output terminal on the ignition resistor.

If you want to install an ignition resistor bypass wire, then you will need a starter switch with a side terminal.

Take a look at the photo below of the black ignition resistor bypass wire.

You stated when you turn the switch the Head lights Don't come on..
Somewhere as soon as you load the circuit your loosing connection, has
enough ground to charge the battery & run the ignition but not the starter.
If you've cleaned all connection, with KNOWN good battery's then you do have
a issue somewhere else like starter or starter switch or wire from starter to
amp meter..
