Hey guys I recently purchased a 1949 John Deere G and the valve area is making a loud ticking noise. doesn't sound to bad but noticeable. is there anything I need to check or not, or is this normal. tractor runs perfect. thanks.

No sir not yet. do you or anyone know what the hot or cold clearance should be .. I know I need a manual but hadn't got one yet. is there a top dead center mark or just rotate engine over with starter until in between strokes.?? ?

Unless the rocker-arms have been recently re-conditioned...I would set them with a Dial- Indicator..

You just cannot set Valve Clearances accurately with worn Rockers..

Not actually very hard to do, but they must be removed to do it..

Sometimes a very small difference makes a huge difference in valve noise...

Sure...

You WILL need to rotate the engine ( for this engine, TDC Compression for each pair of Valves will work).

It may be easiest to use a Magnetic mount to secure the Dial Indiacor to the Head ( or anything secure)..

Set the Indicator point against the Rocker Arm..in line with the Valve Stem, "Zero" the Indicator with the rocker against the Valve Stem..

Then all you have to do is raise the Rocker Arm with your fingers and read the Indicator..

I know, there are specific positions of the Flywheel for later JD engines, but this engine has no "Overlap" in the valve timing..

As long as you leave the Rocker in it's normal position, you

The book calls for ,020 hot. I set mine (all my 2 cyl) at either .022 or .023 cold. Personally I'd rather have them a smidge loose than too tight. They will have a little ticking noise if too loose, but still better than too tight. My $0.02 worth.

HOT...Really FULLY and thoroughly HOT ( Saturated). for re-torquing and Valve setting hot..

0.020 HOT, 0.22" Cold.
