Pony Motor Starter

When I push the starter button on pony motor on my 720, all I get is clicking sound. The starter motor does not turn the pony motor. The battery is fully charged, so what would cause this clicking sound? Is it the magnetic switch? I just put a new one on a few months ago.

Momentary jumper across the two large terminals on the solenoid/magnetic switch and see if the starter runs. You can use the ends of one lead of a set of booster cables.

I would trouble shoot with a digital voltmeter. verify what the voltage is when load is applied(cranking) on both pos and neg sides of the circuit. A poor battery can burn solenoid contacts (low volts = high amps). make sure the carb did not fill the cylinders with fuel and hydraulic lock the engine. To verify pull plugs and crank engine. Be careful due to possible fire danger with fuel spraying from holes and plugs sparking in the area.

Yes, it is the magnetic switch clicking, more commonly called a solenoid. After Bill and Bob's fine advice have failed to produce results, you can try to tap on the starter itself with a hammer. If this causes it to want to then start, odds are very high you have a worn out set of brushes in the starter. A new set should see you well into the foreseeable future. Parts applet shows 811553 which crosses to Delco D-752.

I found the problem. The metal bar that goes from the magnetic switch to the bolt on the starter motor was touching the magnetic switch body and shorting out. As soon as I put a screwdriver between the two and separated them by an 1/4 inch, the motor starts fine now.
