Unstyled A rod bearings

I have an unstyled Model A. Unsure of the year. Serial number is 474298. When I look at this site for rod bearings, it lists an insert for serial numbers 264000 (I think) and up and 488000 and up. So my number seems to fit one of those categories....BUT I am 99% sure there is no insert. I have shims and babbit style. So will this insert replace the babbit or did they use babbit and insert both on the same years? I have found part numbers for B rods that use insert or babbit but nothing really on the A. Also my rod journals are 2.996" if that is any help. The inserts listed don't give an ID and OD but only standard or -.010, -.020 so I cannot measure and see if they might work.

I am trying to get this tractor running on a budget to circle the yard once or twice a year just because my mom likes to hear it run. Tempted to try a piece of leather. Does that work on tractors like it does on cars? Already needs 4 tires (11-36 on back$$$$) radiator work, no paint left. Just not worth really putting a bunch of time and money in to tear apart and rebuild.

Can your rods be adjusted by removing shims? Your tractor is a 1938 model and
has babbited rods, part number AA463R, or rod number A107R. The rods shown
using replaceable shell bearings are for the AR and AO Tractors.

One appears to be snug and OK. The other has what feels like an 1/8 inch of slop. When the cap is removed, it appears most of the babbit is gone. It looks like at the part line of the cap/rod there is a bit left, but center of cap looks like steel. Thank you for clearing up the rod question. I have been reading up on re pouring the babbit in my rod, getting a used rod with good babbit, and switching to insert rods. the latter likely the last resort. I am a machinist, so I can do some fabricating and fudging.

This appears to be a result of the little square socket that drives the oil pump breaking. It sat for 20? years and I am just now trying to get some life in it. We started it 3 times or so before I knew about rod bearing and oil pump problem, so it does run. Cleaned sludge out of her belly, pull started, sounded bad. Started digging for bad noises. Here we are.

I am new to tractors this old and John Deere. I can google and find most stuff but some I am going to have to ask. Thanks so much for anyone and everyones help in this process.

Usually the journals are so out-of-round that an "Insert type" bearing will never work..

Babbit is far more tolerant of out-or-round and will live a long time that way..

From the sounds of it, you must replace that Rod ( or have it re-babbited but purchasing another one and maybe getting a Core Credit for yours would be the best you can hope for..

You had better check the Main bearings also and the Rod Journal should be inspected carefully and measured for out-of-round..
A NEW (or freshly machined) Crankshaft can be used with Rods with Insert bearings, seldom is done..
Why change out something that has worked well for 70 Years..?..!!

Same tractor different topic.... radiator on styled/unstyled the same? Our old tractor needs a radiator also.

I would try to adjust shims and leave babbitt if possible.

Can you explain the definition of snug, that concerns me?
