Hello all. New to the forum postimg but been reading many post on here for a while.
Little back story. I recently purchased an older john deere 24a skid steer with a 4 cylinder isuzu deisel for i believe a really decent price. Gentleman i bought it from ran it into a pond , got scared of it and let it sit a few years. I bought it locked up and non running with high hopes that id save it. Got it home and discovered not only was it alternator locked but starter locked as well. Made a trip to my local carquest , picked up a new alternator and starter for a 1982 chevy luv 2.2 diesel (which bolted right up no problem) and a can of ether and she runs beautifully. Ended up rewiring glow plugs, starter and alternator, changing filters and fluids and replacing the waterpump (again a chevy luv part) but for the most part she was ready to work. Ive run it a few days building a motocross track for my kids and couldnt be happier. This had led to my reason for beimg here.
1. I have leakimg tilt cylinders. Does anybody know of a rebuild kit or exactly what parts i will need to rebuild them? ( im sure the guys at carquest could match them up and get them once i pull them apart i would just prefer havimg all the parts beforehand)
2. There are 3 valve linkage places where the pedals hook up. I know 1 controls lift and the other controls tilt but the 3rd is not hooked up to anything. What does it do and what controls it?
3. The valve body that the pedal hook to are leaking a little too. Can new seals be put in with a fair amount of mechanical knowledge?
4. The biggest question of all. What can i , should i, do i need to upgrade , reinforce, look out for. What if anythimg was poorly designed or known to fail on these machines that could be prevented with some preventative or modifications prior to failure?
I thank you in advance for any help at all

Welcome to YT.
You can view parts catalog at JDparts.com. Parts catalog number is 1577. It appears tilt cylinder have a part number serial number break at 001509. You could also probably get repair parts at a good hyd repair place.

3rd or 4th pedal was for remote hydraulics. Either grapple on the bucket or other. Should be lines but capped off?? 4th was for a
scarifier on the rear of the machine.

Experience I have is with a JD 170.

Thank you for the information. I was kinda thinking thats what
the other control was for. Ive looked at a few parts fiche and
have only seen discontinued cylinder parts. Ill check out jd.com
when i get more time. Thanks again
