Deere 4230 Hydraulics jerky

Just acquired a '74 4230 syncro. The
rockshaft is very jerky when raising it.
Tonight I changed the fluids, hydraulic
filter and cleaned the sump screen. After
doing this I checked the pressure coming off
the gear pump at the clutch valve housing. I
did add two shims to get the pressure in
spec. It was good on all four ports after
doing this.

I have not got to check the main pump
pressure yet add it takes a different size
fitting. The rockshaft is still jerky after
all this. What next? Is there a way to
verify flow on the gear pump without a
special tool?

If we can get through this next will be
diagnosing a hard cold start condition to
make sure it is as good as I can get. Then
off to Tim S. House to get the steering
valve Rebuilt.

Best & most accurate method to check GPM is with a flow-rater. You can place a container under & remove hyd filter housing. Turn engine over for 15 seconds then measure amt of oil in container. Multiply amount of oil by 4 to determine trans pump GPM. One fallacy to this method is oil pumped was not under any pressure
