SHIFTER PROBLEM

I have a "shifter" problem with my 51 A that has been stored for six years. Can only shift on the left side with first, reverse, and fourth. Any suggestions on how to correct, other than pulling shifter? Thanks for any and all.

You might try driving it around, try to find a place carefully driving one side lower than the other and than the other small ditch or hill, be patient and try working shifter, could be rusted up some this might get some lubrication on it. Do not pull up on shifter.

I'd just pull the transmission cover and look. Quite possibly just need to re-align the shifters. I had a problem with my 720D one time because of trying to do a "quick shift" during a parade. There is a lot more to remove to get into that than an A. I won't quick shift that tractor again!

Save yourself some time and worry and follow OLD POPPER'S advice. It is no trouble to remove the shifter cover. You don't have to remove the steering shaft. The shaft will flex enough to lift the shifter mechanism up and to one side. Oil the shifter mechanism and try to move the shifters. Be sure that the shifter gates line up straight before reassembly. Actually, the shifters and rails don't get a lot of oil thrown up on them.
