Is a 4040 the same tractor as a 4230 and what is the most popular and durable transmission ? Also are they better than the 4020 or just newer?

The differences are pretty small...

The 4040 was rated with a little less HP. Maybe just a tweak on the injection pump?

Any of the transmission options would be long lived.

The cab might be just a tad nicer on the 40 series, but it is pretty similar.

I would say no! My buddy has a 4040 and a 4000, The 4000 will out work it hands down, no problem. He would like to replace the 4040 with a 4240 when he can find one at the right price for him. He had the pump turned up on the 4040 to just under a hundred horse this summer so will have to wait until fall field work to see if it helped any. His cousin had a 4230 that my buddy drove and worked ground with and he said the 4040 seemed lighter and less power then the 4230. PS, The 4000 puts out just above ninety-five horse.

'77 4230 has same injection system as 4040.
Maybe pre '76 4230 had narrow seat wells.
Some 4040s were pretty weak.
