Does anyone have working knowledge of burr mills?

Can you be a bit more specific???? Generally, the grain goes in one end, and out the other.... ;)

Sorry, that was my Mr Thinker answer!

I have very small burr mill that's been in my family for many years, runs with a 1/2hp motor.
I grind our corn meal with it, too small for anything like livestock. very simple machine, the
only adjustment is the spacing of the burrs. Closer grinds finer, apart grinds coarser.
Condition of the burrs is important, if worn it may not grind well. Grain needs to be good and
dry to grind finely for meal. Might help to take it apart and make sure the burrs are not
clogged and clean before you start. Hope this helps.

I have about 6 burr mills, all about the same, adjust the burrs close for fine grind, loosen up for coarse. One of the last ones I got was from a friend of mine, his grandfather had bought it new, was bolted to the floor in their barn, it is a Letz , sold by J.D., has good stenciling on it. Plus he had 2 sets of new burrs for it, plus part of a parts manual. Also have 2 Stover's, a Rumley, an old upright I bought at an auction sale over t 30 years ago, sets on a round cast iron base, and a small one I don't know what it is. See them at sales once in a while, like everything else, price depends on how bad the people that are bidding want them.

I have a 220X which is a nice little grinder set up on a cart and run by PTO. My question is about the burr plates. I'm trying to get it to grind finer. When I bought it I got one extra double sided plate. Trying to figure out if need to replace two. I'll provide some pix when I get a chance. Off to mud in some wheat.

Here we are. The operator's manual assumes you were born in 1915 and have some experience with burr mills.
The upper left is the outer burr, bolted to what is called the "revolving plate holder". The upper right is the inner one, it is mounted on a yoke and will tilt a bit.
The lower plate is the extra I got with the grinder, it's obviously for a much finer grind. I guess my big question is, am I supposed to have two so that I can replace both the inner and outer? Since I just have the one, will it do much good to replace one?

I tried to load some pictures of mine and the burrs and can't get them to load. I have 5 of the larger notched burrs one with a round hole and another with an oblong hole in it. Plus what are in the mill. On the end of the hopper is says No. 111 X. I can't find the parts list he gave me, like I said it was missing some pages. I'll keep looking for it, I found a couple boxes of literature, will keep looking.
