I recently purchased a 1945 Model D in its working clothes. The previous owner used a 12 volt battery to start the tractor because the generator (and three 7" lights) was disconnected with no belt. He did point out that when the 12v battery was hooked up, the light on the dashed worked so it must have been hooked up to the battery somehow. The generator looked original (faded green paint that matched the tractor) and did not appear in bad shape from the outside. Anyway, I pulled the generator off to have it serviced and a repair shop said that it was a 12 volt generator which surprised me. My question is, did these tractors come with a 12 volt system? If so, were they positive ground as well? Obviously the starter worked with a 12 volt batter but is there something else I should be concerned with the starter?
