JD 65 parts

I know this forum is for John Deere tractors, but I figured you guys could help me out a bit. I have a 65 pull type combine that needs a few parts and I am wondering if any of you can help. First off I need to get some different rasp bars because mine are completely worn out, second I am looking for a few head parts. I need the sickle attachment that bolts to the front of the head as well as the reel. my head is now set up with a JD pickup for doing oats and wheat, where I would like to make the head back into its original state with the sickle and reel. the head is a 12ft head and if anyone could help me with this problem I would appreciate it. I am also putting this in the implement forum so don't tell me to do so. thanks!!!!!

The rasp bars are easy- they should be the same as a 55. Believe it or not, I may have a reel (I have to look if it is still there) that came off a 96 we used to have. However, you are missing the frame arms that holds the reel as well. Which makes me wonder, did yours ever have a reel??? Or was it a pickup unit right from the get go?

Well you know that does make sense!!! I never thought of it being like that from the factory. How hard would it be to find a head for it that wouldn't be a pile of junk? I would really like to make it work for beans of that's possible.

The head search might take some doing. The 96 was very similar, only it had a 40 in throat in place of 30. We purchased the 96 in about 1989, and used it for beans a couple of years. With no flex sickle, it wasn't the greatest for efficient harvesting of beans. We had removed the 4 bat reel, and cut down a pickup reel from a 6600 grain platform and installed that in it's place.

I sold the thing a few years ago (on this site) to a collector in IN.

If it was a northern machine i am sure it had a pickup on from day one, there were thousand's of them sold in the Dakota's for wheat, oats, barley and such, and in them days the wheat was not bred, with the straw strength, to stand for straight cutting, like it is now,and don't think they used the pull types in the south, for winter wheat either.

If your really wanting a straight attachment for it, your going to have to find a 55 , with some straight cutting parts which is essentially the same machine. How's that Hercules flat head, still in running condition, the Minnespolis Moline self propelled [ the one with that round grain tank] and other used that same engine.I have a friend that's got about 12 old combines, all in good working order, all got straight cut attachments,, he had a little combing bee July 29 this year, I pulled a case 465,, i think was the number, A PTO,40inch machine, with a 10 foot cut on it, in 1st gear with a Super MTA in about 75 bushes wheat, and that was plenty fast, it was barking !!! Good Luck
