2640 not turning over occasionally

I have a JD 2640. Most of the time it starts and runs fine, but one out of ten times, it won't turn over and start. No indicator lights will come on either. I sometimes jiggle the gear shift in and out of park, sometimes rock the tractor, play with the key and it will start no problem. Batteries are good.
Any idea what is going on here?

Check the KEY switch first. Then go to the neutral safety switch. It may be bad some times the end wears and they will not work the switch correctly anymore. Just take a test light and check each side of the switch when you turn the key to the crank position.
 
Thanks for your replies and insight. I will test the key first. So, where is the neutral safety switch? ;(
 

Have you cleaned/tightened ALL battery cable connections?

Neutral start switch is located under cowling that the 2 gearshift levers protrude through. Sometimes one can remove a sealing washer or 2 from NS switch then re-install old switch for better contact. I'd advise to relocate battery negative cable from battery box to engine block or better yet starter mounting bolt.

Remove the cover that is behind the gear shift lever going back towards the seat. Four short bolts on the corners IRC. The switch (#11) is on top of the transmission under this tin cover.

As I previously stated on a 2640 one needs to remove cover that gearshifts protrude through as pictured below. There is no cover behind gearshift levers except the rockshaft housing.

I don't know if this is an additional clue but the front and back lights still work when I turn them on. So I think the tractor is getting power.
