Unstyled D Coolant Quantity

What is the cooling capacity of a late production Unstyled "D" -- s/n 143458.

The I&T manual (JD-4) says that Styled "D" takes 14 gallons of coolant.
I drained my Unstyled "D" and only got about 8 gallons.
The cooling system is clean, during the re-build, every section was thoroughly cleaned of rust and dirt.

They held a lot; for two reasons. Those old JD 2-cylinder D's didn't have a water pump so it took a large quantity of water to keep them from overheating when worked hard. Second, it was common practice and a necessity to "burn" water to keep the engine from "pinging" (pre-ignition?) when burning distillate (power fuel) or some I understand burned kerosene, so even though only a very small amount of water was "burned" it probably amounted to a gallon or two in a long days work. I remember the unforgivable sin was to forget to turn the water off when shutting down at the end of the day. Had to tow the tractor to get all the water out of the cylinders and dried out enough to run. Don't ask how I know that.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I only got about 8 gallons out when I drained it this afternoon.
I don't think there is 6 gallons of clogged or blocked spaces in the cooling system.
All of the coolant spaces and the rad were thoroughly cleaned when I restored the tractor several years ago.
The engine appears to slope toward the drain plug.

Anyone have any ideas??

Jon

Make sure a piece of rust hasn't come loose and blocked off the drain hole. Had that happen once. Cracked a head.

I checked for a clog at the drain-plug using a piece of stiff wire to poke around. Nothing came out.
It is still draining very slowly when I open the gate valve (threaded onto a nipple in the drain plug threads.
If small amounts continue to drain over the next few days, there much be a blockage somewhere.
8 to 9 gallons has drained out so far.
