Hi guys,
I had a local ag repair shop quote me a price to put brakes on my jd 4430. What in your opinion is a fair price to put in brakes on
something like this? I understand you have to remove the tires and axles to do it. This shop has a good reputation on working on John
Deere's. Is it something that an average farmer mechanic can tackle themselves? Thanks in advance

On the smaller models you can do the brakes by just removing the axle housing. If you have large enough lifting equipment you can leave the axle and wheels alone unless the axle bearings are bad.
I don't think the larger ones were any different just heavier.
I could be wrong. Everyone should at least own an I&T manual it will at least give you an idea of what's involved.

It really depends on what you get. If you rivet new pads on your existing parts it cost less than buying everything new from Deere. It is a lot harder to pull the axles on a cab tractor than a fender tractor. We usually rivet new pads on the existing parts and replace the center disc if any marks or warps. Go online and price out the Deere parts to give an idea of what it could cost. Tom

All the bearings go off toward the inside,,leave the tire on and pull the final drive with the wheel on..

I don't remember axles being difficult to remove on the cab tractors. I remember swapping axles from side to side for a JD update on several 4430's

Is it possible to use stainless steel pop rivets on brake pads or not?

Rivets don't seem to be the culpright on those things, so I am thinking to put pop rivets to get more consistent clamping and much easier/ faster installation.
What do you think?

I would think pop rivets could possibly damage brake pads if utilized to secure pads to plate.

THanks,
I got TM1030 for a 4620 and it does not say how to rivets new facing. Is there a special tool required? When to determine that the rivets are tight enough?

I got at least 2 4620 that have all 12 facings to change, so I want to learn how to do it (right).
