4020 Rocker Arm Shaft Plugs

Hello,

While investigating the cause of poor running issues / top end noise on our 4020 we found significant wear in the valve adjuster / pushrod region on some of the cylinders. Further inspection revealed that the rear facing plug in the rocker arm shaft had shifted, cutting off the oil supply to a good portion of the top end. (Tractor S/N 263839R with block # 47170)

Having read a few threads with similar complaints I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a fix for this?

Several ideas I had include installing the new plug/s so that it is flush with the end of the rocker arm shaft & then drilling a hole through the plug so that the cotter pin will retain it OR trying to find appropriately sized frost plugs that can be driven in from each end so that deterioration of rubber is not an issue.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Glen Anderson

Just replace the old ones with new plugs from JD. Trust me the new ones should last just as long as the old ones for the first 40 years. Once you see how much fun they are to get in, you won't worry about them moving again for a while.

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess a person can't really complain if a component gives close to 45 years of service but I don't think my OCD will allow me to reassemble in the stock configuration if there is a possibility the failure could happen again. Even if it happens to be another 40 years down the road. LOL!

Thanks again,

Glen
