Deere 4230 Jump out of 3rd and 4th gear

Went and looked at a 1977 4230 today with
3000 hours showing on the clock. The current
owner believes the hours are accurate.
Condition of the tractor overall lends
itself to believing it. The tractor will
jump out of 3rd and 4th gear when going down
the road. It won't do it under a load but
rather when you coast or a load starts to
push you. The owner split the tractor and
pulled the top shaft last fall and had the
shaft rebuilt by the local stealer. Upon
reassembly it still does it. What could I be
in for? I think it's priced accordingly.
What can I look at to confirm what you guys
think the problem is?
Thanks

There is a spring ( #11) that hooks on the right side to the bottom of the cab and goes down to the yoke pin on the shift linkage. If this spring is broken the weight of the shifter lever will shift it out of gear when there is no load.

Also check the cab mounts. If they are bad you can not adjust the shifter linkage to work correctly at all times.

The spring JD described is for the A-B-C and D range lever. My guess is when the tractor was put back together they put a flat washer under the upper right bolt under the top cover, when this happens it "will Not" let the shifter go clear into gear..pull the cab floor and get down to the top cover and remove it,,My bet is you will see a flat washer under that bolt, pull the bolt and remove the flat washer re-install the bolt with "No" washer...I am 99% sure this is what you need to do...

Tim S. and JD seller are right on.A neighbor had a 4230[5500 hrs] he wanted to sell and I went and looked at it and it had the same symptoms and also would not go into high range everytime. He went to JD and they told him without looking it was over 40 years old and would need rebuilt. It was fixed it for basically nothing and it now resides in Wyoming with 0 problems.3000 hours if accurate usually means a pretty nice tractor.

I am talking about the upper right transmission to clutch housing bolt, if a washer is used under it the transmission will not shift to the 3-4 range enough to stay in,,and don't ask me how I am so sure of this,,Darn it...

Tim what does the washer under the bolt do to make the shifter not go into 3&4????

I know the spring I am talking about is for the ABCD range linkage but many guys call C&D 3rd and 4th.
