Pony motor clutch adjustment

I have the clutch hosuing and transmission housing bolted together, and I then bolted this section back onto the tractor by its self and connected the clutch lever to the operating link so I can see the clutch mechanics in action so I can verify everything is working.

When I pull the clutch lever all the way back, I can see the throw out bearing move on the shaft towards where the clutch plate will be, and I also see the sliding pinion gear move on shaft to engage the flywheel.

What I can't seem to get is the 7/32 distance between the cotter pin and the stop plate as stated in the manual. I have about 2/32. I have screwed out the yoke to where I don't have much more then 3/4" of rod left before I can't extend it any more.

Is this normal to have the yoke screw almost to the end of the rod? Is my method for adjusting this correct?

I was thinking about this, and I finally re-read your message and caught something...you're doing this with the clutch and transmission ONLY on the tractor.

It's hard to think about all the linkages without actually looking at it, but I don't think you can adjust it right without having the transmission/clutch all together with the engine. The linkage pushes the gear out onto the flywheel. Then the linkage pushes the clutch onto the flywheel, I seem to remember that when the linkage gets the clutch tight it ends up pushing all of it just a little more in the process which might change your 2/32 to 7/32.

I could be wrong, I will be first to admit getting the linkage right is a pain.

Also, you can bolt all of it together and try adjusting off the tractor. I think the flywheel mesh doesn't move much. You can pull back on the engagement rod with a pair of vice grips.

Just some thoughts, I hope someone else chimes in

chas036,

I do not mean to muddy the waters here but while trying to correct a malfunctioning trans on one of my 70D I found that each (3) have a somewhat different looking stop pin set up. Not to mention that my backup system (intact engine clutch and trans) are from a black dash 720 (have a pic of the engine SN to prove it).

I suggest you put everything back on the tractor as Brandon said and see how things line up then. Believe me I feel your frustration , BTDT.
