JD LA steering box

My LA is VERY hard to steer, and has been like this since I bought it a few years ago. I disconnected the drag link and the front end is loose. As soon as there is any kind of weight on the front tires you cannot turn the wheel unless moving and even then it is hard. I decided to take a look into the gear box and the first thing I found was that the top bearing was destroyed. How do I go about removing the steering column/worm gear? I tried to simply unscrew it but it will not come out. Is there something else holding it in place?
Thanks

It is not easy to get this apart. I see you still have the drag link attached to the steering arm, take that off. Now get a helped. One person slowly moves the steering arm with the other rotates and pulls on the steering wheel. It should, with a little effort and a few tries, walk itself off the gear on the shaft the steering arm is attached to. If your box is not leaking do not try and take that thing apart into two pieces unless you have no other choice. Those are a pain to get back together without leaks. FYI - depending on the type of steering you have I think one of those bearings is hard to find. Long ago I remember there being a post that a bearing for a bicycle crank or steering or something worked... Do a search maybe you can find the post. Luckily the bearing in mine was in good shape and I didn't mess with it. I think Rusty Acres Ranch had a few used ones in good shape last time I checked. Could also try the Ridenours for new/used.

Thank you. I will try and tackle this in the next couple days. I did notice that top bearing that is destroyed had little ball bearings in it. From what I have read the later tractors had roller bearings. I am assuming the bearing with balls in it is the one that is hard to find. Nothing has been easy with this tractor!
