Tractor will not move

I have a friend who lives about 100 miles from me that has an older John Deere model 3010 that will not move forward or reverse. She told me they were using the tractor and turned it off. When they went back to use it again it would not move. I cannot get much more info from her because she knows nothing about tractors. Any thoughts on what might have happened to cause this. I know this is a shot in the dark but thought I would ask anyway. I am wondering if her helper is telling her all the truth of exactly what happened. I will post more info as I find out more and thanks for any help. Tom

Will it hold in Park? if not it could be the differential,if it does it could be the clutch..you would need to put it in Park and try to pull it one way or the other with a truck or tractor to see if it wanted to scoot the wheels..

Is there an engine disconnect lever, like on a 3020? Could have been moved by someone not familiar with the tractor.

I think this tractor may be a 3020. She sent me a picture and I blew the picture up today and it sure looked like the numbers 3020 instead of 3010. Where is this engine disconnect lever located ? where I can get her to check it. Thanks. Tom

(quoted from post at 23:06:16 09/24/16) Is there an engine disconnect lever, like on a 3020? Could have been moved by someone not familiar with the tractor.

Also if it's a 3020 powershift trans beside engine disconnect it has a diff disconnect on LH rear of operators platform for towing that could have been released

Well, I just found out the model is a 2020 instead of 3020. Sorry for that mistake but only going on what I thought I seen on the picture she sent me. She did tell me again this morning that the tractor was working fine. The man turned it off and went to lunch. When he got back on it would not move forward or reverse and she thought maybe the clutch. Tractors normally don't break just sitting so either someone is not telling us all the truth or something simple happened that could get this tractor back going again. I wish I had the time to drive the 100 miles to see for myself but right now I just don't. Thanks for the help and again sorry for the mistake on model number. Tom

It's all a big "Guess" till you know what model it is and try the following things..

"Will it hold in Park? if not it could be the differential,if it does it could be the clutch..you would need to put it in Park and try to pull it one way or the other with a truck or tractor to see if it wanted to scoot the wheels"..

They said that it was moving and just stop pulling and rolled back down the hill. I am getting this information in bit and pieces so forgive me if I am not 100 % sure. This lady is trying to work three jobs and having a hard time paying her bills so she needs help. It probably is more serious that I 1st thought. Sounds like something broke inside of tractor. I am trying to get her to get someone to help her pull the tractor with it in gear and see if the engine turns. She knows nothing about tractors and has no man around to help her. I just don't want to drive a total of 200 miles to check this out but I may if she cannot find someone in the area to help her that will not rob her. Thanks again. Tom

If tractor is indeed a 2020 or similar {Dubuque] equipped with hyd. Hi - Lo / or directional reverser , lever on left side dash ; .. 'DO NOT TRY' TO PULL or Tow it... more damage will occur!! .. A good place to start looking for cause would be with Hi-Lo or Dir.- Rev. lever.

If it quit pulling and they let it roll back down the hill, with the clutch disengaged but still in gear the clutch will explode throwing the facing off. Had guys drive up on the silage pile and shove the clutch in and roll back, throwing the facings off .

I am better this is what happened. I have to drive down that way next week for a doctors appointment. Its not that much more to where she lives and I may just head over and see for myself. Thanks and I will get back if I do indeed make the trip. Tom
