have 72 4230 diesel with roosa master pump & lines. return line has rubber boots. am replacing and having problem putting on rounded clamps. tight clearance for radiator hose clamps. what is best technique and tools. txs

They make special tool for those but I think it is like a pair of pliers with a groove cut into the face of the jaws. I think I have a pair of homemade ones I used ? I also have a pair of craftsman pliers with jaws with small curved parts in them. I think those work good too.

I have since purchased the special pliers to do these clamps but years ago before I was able to do this I took a cheap pair of pliers and drilled a hole in the end and in the side after I tack welded the pliers together. Poor people have poor ways but they actually worked fairly well. Years ago it was recommended to use a couple of pieces of tubing on each ear of the clamp. That can work, too. But the "regulation" special pliers work the best. Mike

Replaced hundreds over the years. I use a pair of snap on needle nose pliers and a small flat bladed screw driver. Snap on pliers have nice tough teeth at the end of the needles . I squeeze the clamp and then push down gently with the screw driver. The more you have done the easier it gets. At first they will make a preacher swear.

They are called "water pump pliers" or "tongue and groove pliers". They are like Mike described, and work very well.

I have a set of those special pliers from snap on that also have a grove cut at a 45deegree angle and 90 to the side. I keep a set of the rubber boots and extra clamps on hand at all times, and if you have one leaking change them all!

i tried napa tool 3976 w/ locking red handles. worked poorly due to not enuf clearance and could not close all the way. see tisco ribbed boot in pic. i sooked them in water + dove soap to make them more pliable and easier to move metal clamp. i do not recommend using a screwdriver to position clamp as it could poke hole. i made tool that worked (first from left) with dremel bit. see pic. with groove i could manipulate ring aok. these pliers were in my tool box. i started with both rings in center. made it much easier.
