shorten rear axles

Is it possible to shorten the rear axle ends 1-2" on my 1951MT while still on the tractor? Any thoughts on method to do this? Obviously I want it to look good when done. Thanks

I bought a tractor that had long axels and would not fit in shop so I cut a couple inches off each axel with a stihl demo saw. Looks good and only way you can tell they were cut is theres no snap ring groove on end of axel.

I have done it on much larger tractors using a bench type cutoff saw. I supported the saw on a pallet on the fork lift. Grind a chamfer on the cut edge and go.
Please don't use a torch :)

When I was at the dealer we would jack up tractor and use a chopsaw, the engine would idle and have it in low gear. These were tractors feeding cattle with concrete bunks. I know we did a 7700 and a 4450 jd.

Thanks for the input. I thought I was the only one that needed to do this. I think I will try the chop saw method.

The MT had two axle lenght' available. Perhaps you you could change to the short axle. I have the long and the short axles available. If interested contact me by email or call 573 535 8952 . Thanks, Tom Ziegler

When we bought our Farmall C the axles had been cut off with a torch and looked pretty bad. I put some tape around them for a guide and cut them off square with a porta-band. Then I drilled the center like original. I jacked up one side at a time and let it idle in gear so I could dress the end with a grinder with a flap wheel. Most people would not know they have been cut off.
