47 John Deere B Questions

Hi Everyone,

I have a 1947 B that my dad bought 14 years ago. He has since passed and I have moved the tractor to our home and am working to fix it up as much as I can. I don't know anyone very knowledgeable on old Deeres so here I am hoping to learn some new stuff.

So, I have several questions that I'd love to hear any advice about. Some may sound dumb but in the interest of conversation I'll ask anyway.

1. What is the best way to test the vent pump? I have smoke that will sometimes come from the pulley, a film of oil from the governor/fan shaft area. I'm worried that it has blow by but compression test showed bother cylinders the same at 75psi if I remember right.

2. Carb related: My carb has what looks like a film of oil? crusted all around it. What could cause this? And, what is the exact purpose of the tube from the head cover that goes to the intake before the carb? Maybe this is no big deal just needs new gaskets?

3. It will only blow bluish smoke when fluttering the throttle.. idling or running and pulling it never does. Any comments on this is appreciated. Bad rings? bad valves? a carb issue? I hope to get it rebuilt soon.

4. What is the best way to test that the rocker arms are getting oiled properly?

Please comment on any topic. I'd be happy to hear any advice or experience on anything. Once again, thank you everyone for your help on these issues.

Matt

By your wording it sounds like it starts/runs and pulls fine with no bangs or pops...carb is fine then and don't worry about crusting..who knows what caused it after all these years. Tube is part of crankcase ventilation system. Take your oil bath air cleaner apart and clean out all the sludge that's probably built up in bottom and clean mesh also and make sure air stack from there to top is free of mud dauber nests etc. This could screw up the whole ventilation system and could cause your blue smoke problem.

What's the best way to clean that mesh screen? visually it looks pretty good. I've always regularly kept clean oil in the bath. I did however have a gobber nest in the intake stack this spring and have been wondering if a chunk could be plugging the vent pipe. That's on the to do list.

Thanks for the advice!

You might consider using an old work sock over the air intake stack to eliminate the dirt/mud daubers.

We use the old socks on several of our tractors.

Hope this helps.
