Starter question

Last night I went to fire up the 7720 and the starter just clicked. Battery voltage good and even put cables for truck on it and still nothing. Tried the hammer trick and still after a few good taps nothing. I do not use the combine much but I need to move it so I can get to the corn head out to put on other machine,so till I can get it repaired can I use a started off one of my tractors? I have several 40 and 50 series with the 466 so thinking one of the would work.

When you turn the key to "start", the "cab relay" drops out and a relay/solenoid on the engine side of the control panel engages, sending power to the starter, so you will hear "clicks" even if the actual starter solenoid isn't engaging.

Start by making SURE the trans. is in neutral and the neutral start switch wires from the switch on the front of the transmission haven't fallen off, or been ripped off or damaged.

If all that checks out, (be SAFE) have a helper operate the key and check for power at the "S" terminal at the starter solenoid during attempted cranking. Check that battery power remains at the battery cable side of the big solenoid, as well.

I checked the voltage and even shorted across the started and it just clicks, most of time a smack with a hammer will get it going.

Sounds like it needs the starter overhauled or replaced if you have to beat on it to make it go...

it has fairly new cables and all is clean. I need to move to out of shed to get to corn head so will a starter from one of my tractors work till I can fix this starter?

They will work but if the tractors are not power shifts
you will get combine dirt in your tractor oil.

Or rebuilding. Hammer needed to 'fix' it regular means the brushes are worn down to a nub. Best if you also check bushings for excessive clearance and correct that situation while in there, but if you can change a light switch, you can replace a set of brushes in a starter with a little more work involved. Getting them will the problem, those that sell these too often are in protectionism mode not supplying the general public but only the large order coming from rebuilding shops. Less than $10 used to cover the four brushes needed.

Voltage drop across the solenoid? A Voltmeter might be more appropriate (and accurate) than a hammer

If it is indeed the brushes, they are readily available through DEERE. Nearb y dealer even shows 4 in stock!

Price is ridiculous, though at nearly $16 each times 4!
