Model 60 starter

I have a '53 model 60 that is giving me starter trouble. It drags and then will just quit after 10 seconds, with a humming noise and a little smoke coming from the starter. When I got the tractor it was not running, however I did put new battery cables of correct gauge and a new battery in also. I am familiar with rebuilding starters, but I'm wondering if it's bad brushes or is the armature shot?

If too much smoke got out it might be burnt up ? If caught early brushes and bushings usually fixes them up.

Thanks Mike. It hasn't smoked much . I have several brushes on hand, but is there 6 total? I can't recall.

Just worked on a 620 and the Bendix was shot...causing a lot of problem...while in there I cleaned up the armature and replaced the "4" brushes...worked like a charm....I doubt your bushings are causing any problems...they're somewhat bulletproof....

I also found by pulling the flywheel the starter work went a lot smoother...angling that starter with all the wires and fixing the cabling is a bear. I have a small hoist and pulling the flywheel is no problem....
