tips on decal install...

So the fellow I bought my 4010 from gave me a set of A&I decals too. These look identical to the sets sold here.

Anyhow...I am not going to paint my cool old 4010 any time soon and had thought I may just install at least some of the decals...I think the fellow that gave me these bought them just to get the shift pattern decal.

I read the tips about the spray bottle/clean water/dish-soap on the parts page(sounds just like plastic model decals as a kid...I stunk at those! :( )

Can I clean up the panel surfaces and stick deals right on top of my old decals?

Eventually the tractor will get new paint and decals but my 'standard' tub fenders and 'industrial' type battery boxes need help(or replaced) because of rust. I don't think the old 'wheatland/standard' tub fenders are available aftermarket...and odds of finding a clean set used I imagine is about nil....The weird battery boxes are actually available through Deere...but about $500 bucks per box!! She's a working tractor anyway...I've been getting a lot of use out of my 4010/GB 800 loader tractor.

Any other tips or advice that may give me confidence in putting some new decals on my tractor?

Thanx..Rag

If your decals have square corners, take a scissors and round them off. Chances are your decals will stick down well enough, but on the off chance that they don't, a square corner will be the first thing to come loose and curl up. By rounding them off you eliminate that possibility.

It is possible to dry-stick them, but in the event that you get the decal started crooked or get a wrinkle in it, you are done. You have one chance and it has to be perfect. If you use the wet method with soapy water, you can apply the decal and move it around exactly where you want it before it sets. I normally apply some strips of masking tape to the panel and measure and draw guide marks on the tape for my alignment. That way all I have to do is slide the decal around till it hits all my marks and then I know it is where it needs to be.

oops--don't know how I did that---what kind of material are the new ones??--clear/thin/ transparent--thicker, more solid, non transparent??--I would not try to go over the old ones--best to remove them---post some pictures and i'll do my best--have installed several thousand on trucks and tanks over the years--but dry is definitely NOT good

I'm going to give it a whirl....one decal at a time.

Seems like I've installed a JD decal or two way-way back. Have installed quite a few stickies on hoods and such.

Think I can do it
