overheated 60

Was approached by the owner of a 60 that was overheated, asking if I would fix it up. Sounds like the tractor won't come to my shop for awhile because of their finances and that's fine with me. Too busy right now anyway.

This 60 was run so hot it seized, it wasn't pulling anything at the time, just driving without a load. It did start up after it cooled. What is most likely to happen when a 60 gets that hot? Cracked block, cracked head, warping or all of the above. I would like to sound half way intelligent when I give him an estimate of what this project will entail. I got our 51 A hot a few times laying by corn with a four row cultivator, not nearly hot enough to seize it but hot enough to warp the head. Nothing cracked though. Maybe I got lucky with the A.

Check the shutters first if early model 60. They had an auto shutter control mounted to the bottom radiator tank. I have had problems with this before.

The owner mentioned something about the radiator but I probably won't know till I have it in my shop. I don't know if he knows for sure. I was just wondering if there is anything that 'usually' happens first when a 60 gets that hot or if diagnosing is a crap shoot.

I took my 60 radiator to Merril Ia to a fellow to re core it. Every bolt broke, and the labor removing those broken stubs was high to say the least. Final bill just over $900.

That's a lot of labor. I heat the bolts red a few times and drip water on them to loosen them. Sometimes it works.

There is no reason to brake the bolts sense you were recoreing it use a torch and the bolts will come out i have done many and do not brake bolts any more
