Without the proper tool is there another way to get the starter off. that back bolt is a pain.? gonna buy one of those wrenches so Ill have it.

3 3/8 drive extensions an a short socket will take it off it is a nut . John deere make a starter wrench for them also.

I wonder if Snap-On still makes the wrench? I still have a few OTC/Deere wrenches along with the Snap-On.

I have used a 1/4 drive 9/16 socket with enough extensions
to reach out the end of the starter since the seventies.
Save that bolt til last so the starter will separate as you
loosen it.

Thank you, you were so right came right off, now how hard will it be to put back on after I get it fixed/ thank you again. rick

The wrench used to cost like $18 bucks...but now is about $80 plus at a Deere dealer! I own a couple of the starter wrench.

Works on a lot of JD tractors with left-side starters

How much are the ebay wrenches?

If you think a 4020-3020 is bad, try a 42,4430 or newer block with the rib or gallery on the side in front of the top back starter bolt...... Ron

35 years as a tractor mechanic and I never knew there was a special wrench for the starter. I always used a couple of 3/8 wobble extensions and a twelve point shallow socket. Guess I learn something new everyday.

I have one of each but prefer the Snap On version. I have made wrenches to get the starters off the utility Deeres but as a rule the tractor HAS to have a loader on it, it must be dark and it must be raining or snowing.6xxx series are "interesting" with the later ones being somewhat sadistic as they use an allen head capscrew.

Yes, I agree, HAVE the stupid wrench, but your/our method is less aggravating and quicker. Just did it yesterday on a 466 in a combine.

Sorry, but I had to laugh at that photo of that wrench. I have worked in several engineering offices, and I can readily imagine the conversations; "We can't design a wrench like THAT!" Well we HAVE TO!" "NO, that thing's too ridiculous." Well what do YOU want to do, smart guy???" I can think the arguments went on for days.

Just replaced the starter on my 2955. Mechanic had a wrench that would fit.
I remember my dad simply heated and bent one of his wrenches for various starter removals. The new starter, is geared and slimmer, so it is much easier to install. Ben

Another use for the JD starter wrench is removing the grill on the numbered 2-cyinder tractors. The bolt on the lower rear corners of the grill, especially in front of the generator is hard to get on. The starter wrench fits around the corner and on the nut nicely.

I have a drawer full of home made bent wrenches, some times when I'm at an auction I will buy a box of misc. old wrenches just to use for these kind of places,,and of course I have one of the first starter wrenches, they gave us one while at a Deere service school back in the 70's...
