In a word NO!! LOL The JD 4440 PWA are hydraulic driven. There is a whole lot of extra stuff to make that all work. So you have lots more stuff to leak and wear. I personally stay away form them.

They are actually called Power Wheel Assist not 4x4. They will not always spin a wheel. The system only puts so much torque to the wheels.

If you truly want a 4x4 get a JD 4450 MFWD tractor instead of the JD 4440 hydraulic front assist drive.

.

In Europe, we had ton of those.
They became trouble free with 4WD unplugged, caped, and planets gears removed (remove all of the slobbering valve under the axle). The HFWD is to get out of mud, when a John Deere H or L would have pulled you out.
Those hydraulic front wheel drives give JD a poor reputation in this area, because the JD were not great for fall work in wet conditions, compare to the European tractors that had the ZF front axle since the late 60's. (OK, they did not turned sharp, but they sure pulled harder than the JD's)

I had a 4440 that had it working, but it leaked some at the valve and the valve support has benn hit by something. I found a 4430 2WD front axle and converted the 4440 into a 2WD.

They only have value on a 20 series for basically show purposes and actually add at least $3/4K.On the 30/40 series they actually hurt the value.I know of combines due mainly to more oil that haven't had any problems. The Europeon 40 series models have the MFWD on some I have seen

In 20 years of working as a JD tech I only ever saw one 40 series front wheel assist tractor. That being a 4640.

Of course I got to work on it...and it was front wheel assist problems.

These have switches that work with the shift quadrant/linkage in the console. The switches have to be adjusted to perfection or the front wheels might try pull the tractor in park or neutral.

Seems like these hyd-drive tractors had a bigger hyd. pump to power the front axel...plus the mentioned switches...plus a valve/solenoid assembly and hoses to the wheel drive motors up front. Extra wiring to the solenoids from the shift switches too. All the stuff has to work or the power front assist ain't no good and could be dangerous(like try drive off in neutral!)....lots of opportunity for leaks as well.

I was wondering about the value also, someday they will probably come around but someday I'll die of old age :O). Thanks Larry. Charlie
