John Deere A flywheel....

Following my last post on "crank seal replacement". Installed the cork seal; ordered both - rubber and cork - didnt find the "rubber" seal in mine so just put in the "cork" seal - worked fine. Now my question is - I have a "small wobble" when running with the flywheel....normal? And yes I am 99.9 percent sure I have the nub on the flywheel in the "notch" on the slinger. I marked the spline on the flywheel and lined up with notch on slinger going together. I cant see behind there to verify but feel it is fine. I wish I would have stated tractor with cover off "before" i pulled flywheel to notice if it "wobbled" then? But I didnt think of that.... any advice please?

Just a guess here -because I am NOT that proficient on a John Deere "A" but I would take the flywheel back on the shaft to see if there is something down inside -between the flywheel and the slinger. It really seems like you managed to have the slinger move a little and not line up so that the stud is holding the wheel out of alignment.
Next thought would be that if the wheel is moving up and down there would be a possibility of the crank bearing failure.
Hope some others can add info to this problem.

The ring gear area usually runs pretty true on electric start models but the rest is rough castings and appear to move all over the place.

okay and thanks...I may do that today....no "up and down" play ---- just wobbles in and out.... maybe .15-.20

Are your splines good? Any chance it just wasn't tightened down evenly? I always rotate the wheel and do each bolt equally to try and make sure it doesn't move and is straight.

A couple of things to add- were the splines clean when you re-installed the flywheel? Did you tighten evenly? And how much did you tighten it? There is NO service manual for an A, so Deere really did not have in direct specs on torque. I and T manual says, "tighten securely."

But it can come loose, and it can be overtightened, which can cause cracking. Maybe someone here could post an accurate torque number.

Last, some of them wobble, and I'm told did when new. I was told the splines were cut with a large broach at the factory, and occaisonally if some filings were left on the stand, the flywheel would not set true when the splines were cut, hence the wobble.

Hey thanks - I removed it and reinstalled it - works fine- a small wobble:) But the bolts are good and tight - the nub was in the slinger....so Ill call it good! Thank you .

A little wobble is common. I bought a hand start B cheap because it wobbled noticeably. Everybody thought it had a bent crank, but it was just the flywheel. Probably had been that way since new. Flywheel was never broken, or cracked, just made that way I guess. Replaced the flywheel cause I couldn't stand looking at it anymore and all was well.
