john deere B hand clutch bolt and bushing nightmare

Just installed new clutch bolt and bushing in handle. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to get both pieces together in that hole without destroying the bushing. Finally got it together again, but handle is really stiff now. No slop or free play. It will stay wherever you take your hand off of it. I put grease in all the parts before assy. Is it supposed to do that when new? I also need the two clutch linkage pins because they are worn in the middles allowing slop in the linkage. Where can I get those two little pins.

I've put bushings/pins in a couple of tractors. If I remember right, I drilled the reduction gear casting to accept the bushing correctly. If the hole is too small, the bushing ID will shrink if you force it into the casting, causing the problem you are experiencing. As far as the 2 small pins, drill the holes to 9/16" and use a 9/16" pin. Putting new 1/2" pins will take up some of the slop, but not all as the holes will be worn as well as the pins.

I guess I don't understand the problem ? Usually getting them apart is the problem. But the tool someone invented makes that much easier and safer so you do not break the ear off the reduction cover. Make sure the leftover pieces of bushing are out of the handle hole. Start NEW bushing into handle hole and then I use the NEW bolt slid inside of it for a bushing driver and drive it on in. Remove bolt and make sure it all fits nice. Then I take that new bolt where the knurled shank is that drives into the casting and I grind it just a wee bit to take the edge off those knurls then the bolt drives in much easier. Use a back up hammer to help keep the ear from breaking off ! Once it's thru enough to get the nut on draw it in and tighten it up. Took longer to type all this. LOL.

I realized after reading my answer I should have said to drill the clutch handle/lever to accept the bushing, NOT the reduction gear housing for the bushing. These "senior" moments seem to happen way more often than I would like! If the clutch handle/lever is too tight on the pivot pin, you'll need to ream the bushing to proper size, probably around 0.020" larger than the pivot pin diameter. Sorry for any confusion! Mike
