What is the best way to remove the main nozzle on a JD A tractor from 1949 ? I f I remember right they use to be removed by using a small slide hammer puller, but also looking for other ideas and will I need to replace the old one after I remove it ?

You can also tap some threads inside the nozzle and use an appropriate screw with a nut spun up on it. Put the screw through a plate with a hole in it, hold the screw head and turn the nut. It does help if you can glass-bead up into the hole the nozzle sits in to get some of the rust out. Yes, you can reuse the nozzle. Clean all the little holes out, but make sure you don't enlarge them! The threads inside the nozzle won't make any difference.

You can also use a little heat on bottom end of it until you see the greenish blue flame just like you do the drill plug/screws. It is just the little area right at the bottom end that is stuck so like others said, blast it before pulling. Blast / heat and cool and then puller and will come right out. When re-installing bevel the top edge a little with sand paper to help it center itself in bore of carb throat and be prepared to tap it a bit with socket as a driver and make sure it goes all the way up in .

Sometimes they are stuck pretty tight and sometimes not so much. To check I use a very fine tipped needle-nose pliers to grab hold of the end of the pickup tube and gently, very gently so as not to a damage the tube, try to wiggle it a just little bit. Sometimes they are stuck and sometimes you get lucky and they come right out. So I would try that first and if it doesn't come right out, I would then do what the others suggest.
