Removal of oil seal pony motor transmission

I finally got the transmission separated from the clutch housing and I think I found one of my problems. The brake plate was worn down completely, and covered in grease. Further investigation found the oil seal where the transmission drive shaft goes through the transmission housing was cracked and falling apart. My question is, how do I remove that seal? I can't see a snap ring, so what is holding it in place?

Those seals are just pressed in place. There are various tools used to pull them seals, get them at your favorite ........ tool store. Next question will be where to get a new brake pad. Search this site to see what others have done. I have not personally had to deal with that yet. Those alinement pins have great holding power don't they.

I'm glad you got it apart, it's been a while since I was in the 70 pony so I couldn't remember the count of the bolts

Dan in Ohio said it right. I usually use a seal puller, it looks like a thin hammer, sharpened to points on each end of the head. Good for sticking in a seal and pulling it out. Takes some practice but not hard.

Check the condition of the bearings on the shaft. If they have any excess play (doesn't take much) the shaft will move enough to let things leak even with a new seal. Been there done that.

My dealer shows the brake plate and facings as AF2075R for $95.34. I wouldn't be afraid to get some lining from somewhere and make one for that price. It was something like $50 last time I got one.

Thanks for the info. What is the website where you found that info on availablability and price of parts?

I use http://www.jdparts.deere.com

You'd have to contact a dealer local to you to get an account. The website shows availability through Deere parts, and the price is tailored to your specific dealer's pricing policies.
