Drain holesn tip

Awhile back there was a post re: oil coming out of starter cover under the crankcase of a numbered 2-cyl. Suggestions were that it was main bearing leak onto starter and getting into the "box". The flywheel cover probably had a "dimple" in edge at the bottom to let out such oil. Things like that tend to get clogged with dirt etc over the years. Some starter covers had drip holes in them, some did not. They too would get clogged. A "cure" is to drill holes in the bottom where oil would go and put a cotter pin (split pin, whatever you call it) through it from the inside with the legs spread sideways just enough to keep it loosely in place. The jiggling of the pin keeps the hole from clogging and the leaks show up where they "should".

To fix it right, would be to replace the crankshaft seal. Very easy and not expensive at all.

Since my tractors are basically "retired", I leave the cover off of the starter compartment. Doesn't hurt a thing for tractor rides, parades and such. Even an occasional plow day doesn't hurt them, and there is no water build up.
