JD G Large PTO When did it change to small?

I don't know when it changed but a man is working on a John Deere g book that is very detailed. He has not put the book out yet but his information on how to contact him was in the either the May June or the July August issue of two cylinder magazine

I don't have an answer to your question, however I do have a 1950 Model G. It has the large PTO. I tend to think it is original, but I have only owned that tractor for 20 years. I cannot verify that it has NOT been altered.

Here's what the parts catalog shows, Key # 14. NOT sure how to interpret that?

Yes, that is sort of confusing. It would appear either 43401 (shaft change, although no shaft listed for a bunch of previous numbers) or 43351, when the housing and seal changed.

THose numbers would seem appropriate to me. Our G is 39139, and had the larger shaft until Dad switched it to the standard one in the late 70's.

The only one I have seen around here with the large shaft was used to operate a cotton picker. Was told by the owner it was designed for that.

G43401 and up (newer) had the 1 3/8" pto according to the parts book.
Now on the other numbers 43351 on that housing there are asterisk's at the far right indicating a note likely a conversion kit or something usually list at the bottom of the page not shown here.

We had a #1 John Deere 1 row cotton picker on our G48259 and the drive yoke
on the header drive shaft only fit the 1-⅜" diameter PTO shaft made standard in 1950 at s/n 43401.
Industry standardization by the Society of Engineers was the reason for 1-⅜" shaft.
I can't find anything in writing about the cotton picker needing a bigger shaft.
