John Deere 40 governor issues. HELP

Hey guys. This is my first post and I am sure not my last. I have gotten my hands on a 1954 40T with wide frontend. I replaced all fluids, plugs, wires, cap, points, etc. The issue I am having is I believe the governor. The tractor will fire right up but idle, mid, or full the tractor doesn't run right. If I hold my hand on the throttle on the carb it runs great but as soon as I remove my hand it starts to run rough again. I called myself cleaning the carb fairly well. Any suggestions or ideas would be awesome but I believe the governor is my issue. Where can I find parts, another governor, rebuild, etc for my tractor in regards to the governor?

Is the cab to govenor throttle arm jerking back and forth?
Will the engine run smooth if you hold that arm stationary?

If I hold my finger on the throttle on the carb to hold it steady it runs great. The arm going to the governor is moving back and forth like it is hunting.

I would tend to loom at the linkage of the throttle system. It probably needs to be adjusted as the yokes are worn out. Also, if I remember correctly, there are a couple of springs in the system. Are they there or missing?

You might consider adjusting the governor linkage.

Hope this helps.

Awesome. I will try to adjust according to this and go from there. I pulled the carb again last night and going to go threw it one more time. I will report back with whatever I come up with. Thanks guys

When you are looking at the carb, with it apart, back off the idle speed screw and gently fully close the throttle plate and note if it fits closely to the bore, look at it towards light and see if there's a gap at one side or the other.

If so, slightly loosen the screws and move the plate a bit so it closes evenly to the bore.

(A throttle plate that doesn't fit well can affect how the idle circuit works and how the carbs transfers from the "idle" to the "load" circuit.)
