JD 434 baler problem

Hi everyone.
I bought a JD 435 round baler at auction a while back and I am just getting around to try it out. I bought it because it has both twine and net wrap. I am trying to get it to work with twine and it seems to do a nice bale but I can not get it to make anything but the real small size. I have tried to adjust the bale size according to the manual but no matter when I lock the adjustment it still begins to wrap the twine on the smallest size bale.

I am hoping that some of you real John Deere mechanics have some ideas of what I am doing wrong and can offer me some things to try. I believe that it is more the operator than the machine. Thanks for your interest.

There are 5 springs near the bale size adjustment. One or more of them are missing or broken and the pump never latches in the dis-engaged position. There fore when the bale gets big enough 3' or so,the pump starts turning and wraps with twine.

Operating with the pump running all the time will result in pump failure. First the dipstick will melt then the pump will fail.

I agree with Roger that all 5(five) springs are necessary for the tying system to function properly. BUT I've experienced hay/dirt to build up around hyd valve spool requiring cleaning/lubrication around the chromed spool shaft. Getting spool & mechanism to shift properly usually solves the problem.Be sure latch/(key 21) is free of dirt/hay so it can move forward under arm(key 14) to shift spool valve shaft up. When you close tailgate look to be sure twine pump belt idler isn't touching belt,if it's touching belt check to determine where spool is (up or down)? Spool needs to be up after gate is closed.

Thanks Roger. You may well have solved my baler problem. I will take a close look at the adjuster tomorrow.
