Hi all,

I'm restoring a 1949 John Deere M (serial ~25000) and the fan assembly seal is leaking. I tried to take the assembly apart, but can't figure out how? Anybody got an idea how to replace the seal? Or can anybody tell me the difference with the new available fan assembly for serial no. 27365 and up?

Thanks in advance!

I detailed the repair procedure on here awhile back. I know the archives are hard to find anything in. Basically I cleaned up the back really good and found a thin oil seal (JD part # even) of the right shaft size. Mixed up some JB weld and epoxied the seal right to the back of the hub. The shaft seemed to hold it centered while it dried. Been in there for years and seems to work. Was just enough room for it in there.

Sounds like a good method Mike! Can you decal the JD part number?

I installed a new after market one a few months ago on my 49 MC. The old one was still good but the seal was gone. still had oil in it tho. It now hangs on my shop wall

If I can remember to go grab my JD parts book out of the shop. IIRC I wrote it in there.

Hi Mike, thanks for the number and the idea to fix this! I glued the seal to the fan assembly and the oil seems to stay inside. Now on with the rest of the restoration.. :)
