730 Gas Fan Shaft broken?

Hey all, I have a 730 Gas tractor and the fan shaft spins free by hand into the governor. So I have no power steering, ventilator pump, or water pump.

I started tearing into it, but wondered if there is anything common it could be? I am thinking a keyway on the shaft into the governor?

Looks like I'll have to take the whole top of the tractor off to work on it.

I am not an expert on a gas 730, but I would bet it is the coupling that connects the power Steering pump to the shaft from the governor...

As I recall, those may wear out...

Ron..

I don't really see a coupler, but I am HOPING it's the woodruff key.

The picture you show is not right for a power steering tractor. Power steering models have a splined coupler on each end of the fan shaft. I have seen the couplers wear out before.

Ah! Thanks.

Now... any idea if those couplings are in the tube/shield that goes into the governor?

I recently had the governor off of my power
steering 70. In my experience, there is
enough room to slide the fan/power steering
pump and shaft assembly, forward about 1.5
inches without hitting the radiator. This
should allow you to examine the gear on the
splined shaft. If it is still okay, then
your problem must be inside the governor. If
not, it'll most likely be one of the two
couplers on the splined shaft.

About where the two couplers are located
inside the tube, they are each located on
either end of the tube that the shaft
assembly fits inside of. They are each about
2.5 inches long.

So I finally got the radiator out! AFTER I jammed the water pump into the core and sprung a leak. How on earth did they assemble these things... like a puzzle getting it apart!!!

Splines are fine. It must be in the governor. :(

Gonna tear into that next.
