720 pony motor clutch problems

Last summer after sitting for 20 years, I got my 720 started. The pony clutch from the start was always grinding when engaging, and sometimes disengaging. Over the last year, I was able to engage the clutch enough to get it to turn the diesel enough so I could start the tractor few times over the year.

This summer it seemed to get worst, and I had to play with the clutch trying to find a point where it would engage and stay engaged long enough to start the tractor. Over the last few days, now I can't even get it to stay engaged at all. I can play with the lever until I find a point where it feels engaged, and the diesel will turn one rev and disengage. The pony keeps running but nothing happens with the clutch.

I tightened down the adjusting bolts on the clutch , but this did nothing.

What can be causing this and can this be fixed without having to remove the complete pony motor?

is the pinion gear engaging the flywheel ring gear correctly? are you sure the overrunning clutch is holding? seems like i have read you can pull the pony transmission and leave the pony engine but not sure, may be just as easy to just pull whole works and put it on a bench they arn't that bad to remove.

Pinion gear is engaging the flywheel and I can see the center shaft spinning, but as soon as the pinion is engaged, nothing happens and the center shaft stops spinning.

ok looking at parts book the overrun clutch is what drives that shaft that your seeing. the fact that it makes a grinding sound makes me suspect that clutch instead of the pony clutch but i have very limited experience with these, non the less it seems as though your gonna have to pull it off and tear it apart to see what the true issue(s) is. parts book is available online on Deere's web site pc0532 is the book number or copy and past the link if it'll work.

try adjusting the clutch on the pony. sounds like the clutch is not holding. if the pinion is coming out of the flywheel you need to adjust the pony linkage so that it goes over center to hold pinion engaged.

The pinion stays in the flywheel when I engage the clutch, but once the pinion is engaged, the shaft in the middle of the pinion stops spinning, yet the pony motor continues to run. If I play around with the lever, engaging and disengaging a few times, I can find a spot where the pony will start to turn over the flywheel, but only once or twice , and then the pony will keep running but nothing happens with the flywheel.

Been many years ago but I remember tearing into the starter over running clutch right on the tractor without removing the pony motor. I bet flywheel had to come off ? Don't remember what all I found ? I think there are some flat rollers in there needed replaced and maybe some worn spots cleaned up in the gear ?
