JD 60 stuck in 5th gear

Yesterday I did about 1 1/2 hrs of brush mowing with my '54 model 60 and a 307 3 pt. gyramor. Mainly in 1st gear some in 2nd. I headed home in 5th gear. When I got home I stopped at the house to down shift. When I tried doing that I couldn't get it out of 5th. If you look at the shift pattern, 5th is on the bottom right. It will come out to the left but won't go up. When it comes out to the left it does take it out of gear however there is something preventing it from going up into any other gear. I'm not a professional transmission guy so any help or advice is appreciated!

Just remove the shifter housing and using a big screwdriver or some such tool to line up the shifters and you will be good to go,
keeping in mind that the top shifter needs to go far right or left to get it back . The shifters are worn and the shifter stick could be bent. I used to weld a small bead on the shifter housing so the shift lever had to go down and around the corner so you would not loose the shifter . Oh, and block up the light column after removing two bolts to give more room to slide out the shifter housing .

In addition to donmyeil post, another possibility is a broken or slipped snap ring
on the shifter stick. It retains the spring that keeps it all together.
If you can rotate the shifter stick, and the knob seems to go around and
around in an egg shaped pattern, the lower part of the stick is bent.
Last time I bought one from Deere, it was $200. nine years ago.
