JD Diesel Weeping

Looking at a 1965 4020 diesel that has sat since at least 2008. Got it good and warmed up today and noticed one of the weep holes on the left side of the block is seeping. Is that a sign of a near future overhaul?

Also, it has a power shift transmission. When you put the tractor in neutral or park and let the clutch out the tractor wants to try to crawl along a little. I assume the park pawl is out, but what about the creeping along? Thanks - Bob

To me weeping means very little. One of the two orings separating the water and the oil has failed. It could run years and thousands of hours without the other failing. Years ago when overhauling my 3020 I must have damaged one of the orings because it leaked right away. I just plugged the holes and that was 12 years and 3500 hours ago. On the latter tractors there were no weep holes. Tom

I agree tractor with trans control in park then creeping when engine is running sounds as if park pawl isn't engaging or broken.Park pawl control cable could be frozen. Slight creeping of PS trans. is normal. Does it shift through all gears? Weeping is a sigh of o-ring failure on piston liner. I agree engine could run many hrs or need OH in a short period of time.

There's a lot of difference in a fresh engine weeping and a tired engine weeping. With no oh record I would plan on one. jmo

I had an early 4020 and a 4010 that both weeped right before they got rebuilt. I'm not saying yours will need rebuilding but both of mine would quit weeping after they got good and warmed up. Most of the time when a guy has a slight coolant leak like in the winter when things get cold and shrink, after the engine gets warmed up and everything expands the leak stops until it cools off. Makes me wonder why after you "got it good and warmed up" it didn't stop. As far as the powershift wanting to creep for me it's the nature of the beast, I've got a 4455 PS that rocks against the park gear until it warms up, always has.

Engine hours have nothing to do with weeping. Often it is cooling system maintenance. I have owned dozens of 3010,3020,4010 and 4020 tractors that would leak some. Like I posted before the newer tractors are no different they just do not have the hole to let the leak outside. If you have the money to spend then go ahead and overhaul the engine for a bad oring.
