Looking at buying a 4430 Powershift

I went and looked at a powershift 4430 the other day and it seems to run good. Needs some cosmetic work but seems like a good tractor. My
question is how delayed should the shift be between gears? Seems to hesitate a little more than I think it should. We have a 3020 powershift on
the farm and it snaps through the gears pretty quick. I have never ran a 30 series powershift so didn't know if this was normal or if I should
walk away?
Thanks
Derek

There is a shift adjustment via controling flow. check the transmission oil filter. Run a corrosion inhibitor test strip in the coolant.
What serial number? Has it had the differential carrier upgrade ?

Forgot to mention it's a 75. The guy that
has it doesn't have the history on the
tractor. The rest of the tractor I amean
happy with just don't want to have issues
with the powershift.

I looked at those too but after driving the quad range i looked for that instead, eventually bought a 4440 with quad range. Powershift was too jerky. The 50 series with 15 speed powershift is the only powershift i have cared for.

Well in a perfect world a 4450 w/ the 15 speed powershift would be ideal but just not in the budget. Not opposed to a quad range, have ran them and like them. Kind of like the powershifts and it will work just fine in my operation.

As mentioned below, they can be adjusted. A bigger concern would be to make sure it is not slipping once in gear. And it is also possible the transmission is fine , but the damper clutch between the engine and trans is slipping. This would most commonly show up between 7th and 8th gear. If there is a long hesitation there, it is a good possibility it is the damper clutch. The only good news of that is that it is a much cheaper fix than the transmission itself.

I sold mine a few years ago, 11,007 hours on it- first engine, first Power Shift, first (light) rear end, 1974 model. Burned a pint of oil in 100 hours, had it since 1980.

I know what you mean price really jumps up. Good luck on your search. I was looking for one for the convenience on loader work but I just couldnt take it. Felt like I was tearing something up when I shifted. I dont use the "powershift" between 1-2 and 3-4 on the quad either unless very low rpm...im peculiar about some things dont mind me...

Thanks for the help guys. I know these are very reliable tractors, just don't want to end up with someone else's problems because it wasn't ran the way it was supposed to. I think I will keep on looking.

My 4255 with quad range trans has over 11,400 hrs on speed-hour meter and the hyd 2 speed(hi-lo) has been shifted both plowing & baling 1000's upon 1000's of times under load at pto rpm's with no apparent problems. BUT I don't downshift at speeds much over 7-8 mph but do up shift into transport speed(high gear).

Yeah I know they were built tough, and I have always heard the powershift was actually tougher than the quad range, but more expensive to fix if it did break. Like the OP the 50 series PS is my favorite but I really love the 30 and 40 series too, and Ill take em over any of the new ones. Im thinking these new ones wont be still working hard 50 years from now. They are comfy though.

Keep looking OP, there are good reasons these things hold value, and will continue to do so. I think you sre going to get more tractor by buying from the 30 or 40 series even if you have to fix something time to time.
