Going to look at a local JD 2940, 2 owner, Laurin cab, 4x4. Tires are 85% or better all around. Nice shape, no rust and cab is in nice shape with working heat and a/c. Tach shows 7,632 hours and there are some service records available from the last 12 years. Records say hydro fluid was changed 3 times in last 12 years at Deere dealer. Was told the tractor starts easy, runs out good, brakes good, everything works. Seller will not allow me to check sump screen, already asked. Price is $14k as listed. My 2440 spray tractor is about shot and this has 4x4 which will be helpful on our hills and a much nicer cab plus a little extra HP. Would you be a buyer? If not at $14k at what price?

Short of trying to get a look at the sump screen and fluid anything else to check?

Location of tractor has a large bearing on value. One good thing is the fact that it has aftermarket cab so it won't have the master/slave cylinder clutch control.

I'd say look around the place and see what sort of shape they keep thing in general. Might not be a bad idea to at least try and talk to the dealer that did the work last time. If they know the tractor and the guy and are willing to chat you may get some good news or find out more about the condition of the machine in general.
Did any of this service include antifreeze changes ?

Price doesn't sound as crazy high as other stuff I've seen advertised.
My uncle had a 2940 4x4 no cab. bought it new and it was a really good machine. I still can't believe the mud hole he drove it thru and pulled a plow too, busting up the ground so it could dry ! I had the 2630 2wd and disc buried there. I got the tractor out but he had to pull the disc out.

No antifreeze change records only engine oil and hydro.

The guy keeps a nice place. Barns get painted every 3 years, equipment all kept inside when not in use, grass mowed every week. He is moving towards all 55 series tractors and the reason for selling this. Has only day hay work in the past 5 years running a double rotary rake occasionally on round baler/mower when fields were wet which has not been this year!

Well you already have WAY more info then you could ever get on an auction tractor. Waterloo tractors are likely too big and expensive for your operations I'm guessing. Can't say as I'd blame someone for not wanting you to mess around with the sump screen as that is a major operation and messy job ! Though I'd sure hate to get one home only to find it full of brake lining pieces ! Usually anyone running JD hyd. oil does not have the problems of those that don't. That tractor from a place that looks like they try and take care of things may not stay for sale long.

7,632 is getting to be lots of hours on a Deere 300 Series engine. Has it been "overhauled"?

I have a neighbor dairyman that had three JD utility tractors(one 2440 & two 2355's) with 300 series engines that went over 12,000 hrs each without an overhaul BUT he's got a JD 5603 that didn't make it to 4000 hrs without OH.

Check the boss above the hyd filter housing for a tapped hole with a set screw in it. If it's there it has the updated line inside. Deere got skimpy with the line length on these. It's been a while since I've fooled with these but most hyd problems I saw with the 2940/2950 started with the trans lines. I would work on the price a bit.

Truthfully I would NOT buy a JD 2940 with that many hours. The JD 2840 and JD 2940 just had too many issues for me to be comfortable buying one. Also he is at the top end of pricing. The after market cab makes it worth less too.

Keep looking and find a JD 2950 as I have had much better luck with them. Then you can have a JD cab.

I drive by there 2-3 times per week, saw it out for sale and called. I hadn't drove it yet when I posted the other day. I have now and will post an update.
