450 Roosamaster 4020

Considering putting a 450 roosamaster on a 4020, asking for input on who is a good pump builder and if they have a good combination for turbo and nozzle sizes.

That size head will put added pressure on the
rear cam gear and oil pump drive gear. Also
the front cam drive key.
If you have a '64 head it will be easier to
get someone to resize the injector tip holes.
You are dealing with obsolete technology.
Get a later model tractor that will be easier
and cheaper to rig.

Thanks for the reply. But not the information I'm looking for. This tractor already has a turbo, 370 head, bigger injectors. Just need a little more power.

I would agree in not trying to do too much to the stock engine. Put a 466 in it with an inline pump and make more power with more room for growth. The price likely wouldn't break the bank, either. Mike

I can't help you with your question, but your post reminded me of a story I heard this weekend. If you're a puller I thought you might enjoy it. I was at the tractor pull championships in Bowling Green, and this tractor was in the retired pullers museum, along with the two brothers who originally built it. They said they took it to an indoor pull at Harrisburg. They had the Roosy pump turned up and we're making around 180 hp with 1 turbo. The other pullers told them they needed another 100 to be competitive. "We'll see " they thought. We'll sure enough they got whooped. On the way home the one brother said "I'll get that bigger head for that pump. We'll be ready for 'em next time". Other brother said "no, we're going to put an in line pump on there". Mounted this Mack truck pump on the tractor (one brother worked at the Mack engine plant) and won the pull next time. Said it was originally mounted on the other side of the engine, so they had to time it up backwards.

Would their last name be Thomas? I grew up hearing a lot of stories about Donnie and Lenord and their pulling tractors and how they were as much Mack as they were Deere.Lenord was very good with injection pumps and did several for my Dad. We had a 2510 that would out perform most 3020's and had the black smoke to let you know it. Tom

Yep that's them. A gentleman from southern Maryland bought one of the tractors and put it back to how it was in the mid-seventies. Donnie and Lenard went out to watch it pull. I sat and heard pulling stories for a good half hour. I had seen this tractor in slides, it was great to see it in person.

Years ago had a local 4010 puller with the Bendix injectors that had the .450 head, it ran OK but the nozzle opening pressure was kept lower to help the pump and drive line live. I've got a 12MM head in the CAV DPA on the Super 90 Massey I play with. Have some 12MM Roosa heads out too.

I don't know, I just know that is about all you can do with a roosamaster pump. I've heard of a 500 head also, but would be satisfied with a 450. I did the 370 pump myself but have never had it on a test stand so I don't know how many cc's it puts out.
