plow day coming up

I need some help with setting the plow and tractor before the plow day. There is a lot of info on here, but i still have
questions.I am going to be using a 2/14 trip plow with a B johndeere. I read the archives, and from the formulas talked about the
center of draft on this plow should have my right tire 17.5 from center of the draw bar to the inside of the right rear tire. Well
that's not going to happen, at 22 inches i have 2 inches space before the belt pulley. So i can swing the draw bar or adjust the
hitch on the plow. what was deere's recommendation for this combination, i would like to have it correct before we head to the
field. As always thankyou for your help

this is a common problem with two bottom plows. Adjust both the plow tongue and tractor drawbar, taking about half of the adjustment with each.

NOPE...do NOT offset the drawbar...you WILL have steering problems with that approach..

IF you are using a typical JD 2x14 Plow, there are several possible adjustment settings that will work..

1st example..my '52 JD "B" has rear tires set to 29" from Center of Drawbar to Inside of the tire ( on both sides of the tractor)..

The Drawbar Must be flipped to the Lower position..the Drawbar (Tongue) of the Plow will be Straight and "In-Line" with the plow..

I just checked my 2x14 JD Plow and the Tongue is mounted ( Facing from the Rear of the Plow) Tongue is in the 1st Hole LEFT of the LEFT pivot point and
the Diagonal brace is in the last hole..as long as it can be fastened..

This is called being "OFF-Hitched"

You can change the location of your Plow Tongue, depending just how wide your rear wheel is adjusted, but always keep the Tongue Straight with the Plow( Front-to-Rear)..
NOW, there are 2 steel Plates that attach the Tongue to the Plow....mine are bolted through the 2nd Hole from the TOP..
That sets the correct height of the Drawbar on the Plow..
Now, IF your plow is NOT Rusty, you should be able to use this information to be ready...!!
IF your Plow is Rusty, I have several times posted how to clean it up the easiest way possible...
Using a 4 1/2" Angle Grinder, with a THIN Cut-OFF Disc ( USE a Mask and Safety Glasses)..Hold the Disc at a 30 degree angle to the steel and move it like you would a Putty Knife, until all of the rust is off...there will be a Black Oxide left on the steel and that WILL Scour off well..
You can finish with a 120 Grit Flapper Wheel if you want, but not really necessary..
OIL those Surfaces and NEVER allow them to rust...!!!

There is a reason my rear wheels are set to 29"...

You see, we used our JD "B" tractors in #226 Mounted Corn Pickers, so the rear wheel centers are reversed and 29" is as narrow as they can be set..and that also just happened to be the correct setting for the Corn Cultivators..AND it was appropriate for use of the Manure Loader...!!!

As I stated, you can set yours narrower, just align the Plow, hooked to the Tractor and set the plow so that the front Plow Share will take a 14" slice of soil..if your Shares are in decent shape, you should not have any trouble getting the Plow into the Ground and be able to plow roughly 7" Deep..

What are you going to have for a "Safety", in case you hit a Rock..?
We used the old "Knee-Knocker" and I DO NOT recommend that..( BTDT)..
The Knee Knocker works Great....but you MUST LEARN to keep your Right Leg hung over the Rt side of the Seat...if that Clutch Handle ( which just happens to be the correct length for the Ball on the end to Match where your Knee-Cap is) does kick out ( Hit a Rock?) YOU WILL swear you will NEVER be able to walk again ( for about 20 minutes)..!!
If you are using a Plow with the old hitch that "Drops the Plow" every time you strike a rock, you WILL get tired of that quickly..!!
My Plow uses a twisted Clevis and was designed with a Spring in the Tongue that would allow the hitch to stretch that spring until a steel lever would release the Plow...
I Welded a pair of limiting straps on either side to only allow that hitch to stretch about 1" and that works just fine for me..I don't need to go looking for my Plow anymore..!!
Good Luck and Have FUN...
Let us see some pictures...!!
Ron.

we have the spring loaded hitch, I dont think we will encounter a lot of rocks where we are going but we are sure to learn a thing or two during the day.
